What is Guided Wave Testing?

Guided wave testing (GWT) is an advanced non-destructive testing method used to screen in-service pipelines over long distances and locate corrosion and defects.

How does it work?

The Wavemaker® transduction system excites low frequency (≤100 kHz) guided ultrasonic waves which propagates over several pipe lengths to screen for corrosion and defects in the pipe.

  1. A ring of directly coupled piezoelectric transducers is used to generate shear elastic waves.

  1. The waves will propagate along the pipe and will reflect from changes in the pipe cross-sectional area (CSA) caused by corrosion patches, cracks and external damage to the pipe.

  1. Existing pipeline features such as welds, flanges and supports will also cause reflection of the waves. The reflections are recorded by the same transducer array.

  1. The software processes the information to give accurate location of existing pipe features and defects.
